Sport is such a great agent for building health, fitness, character and local pride in both individuals and teams, but prior to 2005 there was little formal recognition available to the many worthy Kapiti sportspeople in the district.  So the Lions Club of Kapiti instituted the Sportsperson of the Year Awards (SPOY) to fill that gap and the Awards have become a fantastic event on the Kapiti Coast.  The first awards night was celebrated in 2006 and has been every year since then.  All our category finalists are nominated for the annual Wellington Regional Awards – often with considerable success.

With a great turnout (240 attendees) to celebrate sport in our region the winners were announced at the Awards dinner on 2nd May.  Click on the Results tab to see who are this year’s winners…

Fantastic Sponsors!

The business community has been of great assistance in sponsoring the awards and most have remained with SPOY since the beginning – which has enabled the Awards to continue and to grow.

This year we welcome on board some new sponsors: Habit – Health. Fitness. Rehabilitation.  KCP Physiotherapy and Streetwise Coffee – Rimu Rd, Kapiti Rd and Otaki.  We encourage you to support the sponsors in return as without them we couldn’t afford to run the Awards!

We are also very grateful for grants that are secured  – the event runs to breakeven so grant funding is crucial.

Awards Objectives

– To recognise those who compete in or actively support sport in the District

– To select the nominees for the Sport Wellington Regional award

– To promote Lions International ideal of “Service to the Community”

Sports clubs, colleges, families and individuals residing in Kapiti Coast District (Paekakariki to Otaki) are invited to nominate people who they believe deserve recognition for their participation in sport.  This includes young people and those with disabilities who participate as competitors, along with officials, coaches, administrators and others who make other significant contributions to sport.

Value to the Community

The Awards help raise the profile of the Kapiti District as a vibrant and interesting place to visit and to live in, and our thanks go to The Observer newspaper and radio stations who partner with Lions to promote the event.

The intense local interest in sport is promoted and supported by Lions Club through SPOY.

The Awards are an event which is inclusive for young people including college students who are nominated for the Awards.  Many recognised administrators have a considerable involvement with young people in sport.

They provide a social benefit with a youth focus which acts as a catalyst for building a stronger community and is one of the primary drivers in the Lions Club being involved.

The Awards give a strong social message which encourages civic behaviour and enhanced well-being modelled on those who participate in their sporting endeavours.
